  • While Twitter has been less than forthcoming on how they plan to monetize their service, there is no shortage of ideas from third parties on ways to get paid for spending time with Twitter. From pay-to-tweet to selling off the real estate on your Twitter background, there are any number of ways you could be making money off the service. Now, there's another service that – much like RSS-based advertising – offers to pay you for advertisements that run in the midst of your tweet stream. Meet Magpie, an ad network for Twitter.
  • Blogging is fast, informal and easy to do. Spelling, grammar and factual errors happen – but do they make a material impact on the success of a blogger? A small but interesting survey run by crowdsourced copy editing service GooseGrade concludes that they do.

  • A new report by Josh Bernoff of Forrester Research states that usage of social technologies increased markedly in 2008: three in four US online adults now use social tools to connect with each, up from 56% in 2007. According to the report, the largest growth came from ratings and reviews, "voting" on websites, and user-generated video. Blogging and tagging were also popular.
  • As part of the Blogger Program for the Web 2.0 Expo Europe, 25 bloggers from all over Europe were invited to sit down with Tim O’Reilly, Jennifer Pahlka and Brady Forrest. Lucky guy that I am I was part of this small group, enjoying an intense discussion, alas it was only about 50 minutes.
  • Google’s Android Market has been officially live for 24 hours. Here are some early observations and comparisons with the iPhone App Store’s first 24 hours.
  • As we’ve known for some time, only free applications will be allowed on the App Market initially. According to today’s announcement, developers will be able to distribute paid applications beginning in Q1 of 2009. In the past, Google has said that they would not take a cut of the revenue, which many took to mean that 100% of each sale went to the developer. While it is still true that Google is not taking even a single percent for themselves, 30% will go to carriers and the folks who handle billing. This leaves 70% for the developer, matching Apple’s App Store revenue share model.

  • A recent forecast by Magna Global predicts that mobile media will be one of the fastest growing of the emerging media channels, estimating it to grow by 43% to approximately $300 million in 2009. That reach provides advertisers with a huge market opportunity to reach and engage with consumers in a new and scalable way by staying ahead of the curve in advertising innovation – reaching people when and where a decision is most likely to occur.
  • This context-based approach to social media advertising offers a creative, secure way to breathe new life into an old model. With a new way to seamlessly present meaningful offers, and even customized environments, to users, advertisers can now understand and appeal to an individual’s online and offline interests based on the fullness of their participation across social media sites.
  • As Lee notes, many thinkers on this subject have talked about how projects like Wikipedia "overcome" the free-rider anxiety (the idea that someone else will benefit from your labor without having to contribute to it), but that's not quite right: when someone else's enjoyment of your labor costs you nothing, and buys you fame, then you don't have a free-rider problem at all
  • What about us? What is the culture of cloudiness? My hunch (which I cannot prove yet) is that the consequences of going from the web to the cloud will exceed the changes we saw going onto the web originally. I've teased out some cultural dynamics I think will prevail in a cloudy world:
  • Demand for iPhone apps is so great that their makers are getting what could be called an “iPhone bump” — where the release of an iPhone application boosts the fortunes of a mobile application maker overall. The impact is going to be even more pronounced for mobile software makers that had previously been selling to other platforms.

by Markus on October 24, 2008

If you have a presence on twitter, squidoo, blogs, facebook, myspace, linkedin and 20 other sites, the chances of finding critical mass at any of them is close to zero. But if you dominate, if you’re the goto person, the king of your hill, magical things happen. One follower in each of twenty places is worthless. Twenty connected followers in one place is a tribe. It’s the foundation for building something that matters.

There are many places to be, and it’s tempting to act like those non-profits and race after the next one. But it doesn’t work.
