Web 3.0 still seems to have a way to go, and there are still debates about its meaning, but we expect the ride will be interesting. Do we follow the recommendations of the W3C and look for a common standard; do we want the ability to share our data across networks as recommended by the DataPortability Workgroup, or do accept that advertising is here to stay and help businesses target us better as recommended by AlmondNet?

MobileActive08, a conference about using mobile technology for social action, was held this week in Johannesburg, South Africa. The conference was a 3 day event and covered topics such as: mobile internet usage by low income youth, how mobile advancements are creating new opportunities for news reporting, and ideas around using mobile technology to assist the informal sector and micro enterprises.

One thing that seems to have been ignored a lot lately is the presence of Open Source microblogging tools which corporations and organizations can adopt to build community for their brand. The most popular of those is Laconi.ca, the code behind the once-popular Identi.ca. The "other" Open Source Microblogging tool, OpenMicroblogger is making strides however, and just the other day launched its' own "App Store" for installing applications on OpenMicroblogger-powered sites.

Dubbed the 'rewiring of Yahoo,' Y!OS 1.0 launched this week with the introduction of the social suite. Its strategy focuses on opening up almost everything to developers, including content, traffic, and Yahoo's user base.
